Project XJ by a 4x4 Newbie!orHow to teach and old dog a new trick. When I bought my '91 Cherokee, I did so because I wanted a daily commute vehicle that could get me to our cabin in the winter and haul people, dogs, and junk around the rest of the time. Little did I know at the time how addicting Jeeps could be. I soon started reading about 4x4s on the web and newsgroups, and before long I was dreaming about all the goodies I could add on to my baby to make her even better. When I started this project, I knew very little about cars, and even less about 4x4s, so I decided this would be a great opportunity to learn something about both. In doing so, I hope to do most of the work myself and detail my experiences here so others can learn from my research as well as my mistakes. I plan on slowly upgrading the Cherokee to handle moderate off-roading while still maintaining reasonable on-highway manners. This is still my daily driver, so I don't want to sacrifice too much driveabiltity. I hope these pages can help others get started with their own upgrades. It is also my chance to help promote the Jeep Cherokee (XJ) as a first-class vehicle for both on and off road driving. |
