Fuel RegulatorMay 1998Background | Installation | Cost | Postscript BackgroundI have been having problems with my carb. When going down steep hills, it will sometimes speed up to well above idle for no apparent reason. I decided to add a fuel regulator to see if that would help. Others have had good luck using one to help with flooding on steep uphill climbs, so I figured it couldn't hurt. InstallationInstallation was easy. The Purolator regulator comes with all of the hardware needed. It just inserts anywhere between the fuel pump and the carb. I chose to put it between the fuel filter and the carb where it is easy to get to for adjusting. While I was at it, I decicided to change the fuel filter as well. In the process of bending the metal fuel line to accomodate the new regulator, I broke the line where it had been kinked in the past. I bought a new piece of line and bent it to the shape I wanted, then installed it. The whole process (not counting the extra trip to get a fuel line) took about a half an hour. Cost
Postscript5/31/98 - When I stopped on the trail, the fuel sitting in the line vaporized from the heat of the engine and caused vapor lock. I think the metal fuel filter conducts too much heat from the exhaust manifold that it sits above. I have switched back to a plastic filter to see if that fixes the problem. |
